Never Settle by MeghanHetrick Never Settle by MeghanHetrick
I get asked a lot for tips and such for aspiring artists. Which makes me laugh, because i still consider myself one of the fold, lol. ANYWAY, my first response is always to never "settle" with your art. If you're not happy, do what you need to do, learn what you need to learn, to fix it.

So i don't sound like a hypocrite, I figured i'd show my own concept in action. On the left, a piece i did almost 2 years ago exactly, and i remember being pretty satisfied with it. Now, i look at it and go "ew". You recognize the one on the right. 2 years from now, i fully expect me to look at the newest, and go WTF was i thinking? Always be ready and willing to learn folks. It's a lot of work, but it pays off.

Never settle? Isn't that the motto of angry nerds and certain director who re-re-releases his movies?

You can really notice the transition. In the second piece you've made your character smoother and the way you've set the picture naturally and effortlessly highlights the person in the certain of the page. Well Done.

Thanks for posting this! It's really cool to see someone else's art journey as a side by side. 2011 was really good in its own right, but the newest is truly polished. Good luck and happy learning! :D

I didn't notice too much of a difference in the black-and-whites, but I saw major improvement with the colored versions. You've cleaned up your style by not only making the lines and colors more defined, but by knowing when to take away the clutter. Less is more, as they say. Great job and hopefully you continue to improve, madame. :)

Pannels:

1 - Looks like it's from a comic like Spiderman (it's THAT good!)
2 - Looks like it's from a Manga (Incredible!)
3 - Looks like a screenshot from an Anime (Fantastic!)
4 - Cannot compare to anything else I've ever seen.

Huh. While there's a lot you've improved on, like your grasp of anatomy and coloring skills, you've lost some stylization over the years. The one on the left is a really distinctive look, but the one on the right, while very much more technically polished, could be any one of several fantasy artists working today.

But! All art is a journey, and I'm sure that, like you said, in another two years you'll be in a completely different place artistically.

What you did with second art is nothing that you couldn't have done with the first one. (:
Always try more than you think you can handle. That is the ultimate teacher. ;)

I think I actually like the angle and pose on the left more, it feels more dynamic to me. But yikes, that pink, haha. The coloring on the right, especially with the swords, is really great.

hard to pick actually. the second has clearly better lines and coloration, but the first has a mor dynamic pose and composition (more dramatic perspective f. e. the daggers below).

First Congrats on the DD... I hear you! I'm always looking at my old stuff and saying "what the hell!" Stuff I thought was good just ant good anymore. No matter how good you get or how good you think you are there's always room for improvement. "Always a student, never a master" I can't remember where I herd that but I believe in it... I have some people that think my art is amazing but there's also those who laugh at it as if it was a wast of their time just to look at it but out of all those people I'm my worst critic and that's why I will always get better.

Again, congrats on the DD and great example of self improvement.
